The summer season is characterized by a spell of hot, dry and humid climatic conditions. Our body is in need of energy and water to compensate or all the loss due to sweating and whining about the weather.

The only relief that we get from the torturing summer heat, are the many delicious gifts that nature has given us to compensate for the hot weather. Summer dining is fun, the food, the drinks, it’s refreshing and a definite mood buster. Barbecues in the sun, popsicles, all the fresh berries a person can pick and eat, fried chicken, hamburgers, a lot of green vegetables the oh-so-delicious mangoes, and a variety of cool and refreshing drinks to keep away the summer madness; the joys of summer dinning are endless.

So, here is a list of 10 summer-perfect food that we miss, crave and wait for. Get ready for nostalgia.

1. Chuski

Chuski or ice lolly or popsicle is a water-based frozen desert. It is made by freezing fruit flavored liquid on a stick. They are cold and delicious. They come in many varieties of flavors. All you have to do is hold the popsicle stick in your hand, suck on it, and you throw the stick away or maybe compost it, and that’s that until you start over again. All winter we can’t wait to grab a chuski from that roadside vendor and enjoying it while teasing the sun.


Kulfi, the “traditional Indian ice cream” is a frozen dairy dessert. Though similia to ice cream in appearance and taste, kulfi is denser and creamier. It is an unwhipped ice cream, resulting in a solid, dense frozen dessert similar to traditional custard-based ice cream. It comes in a variety if flavors. Some of the common flavors are mango, kesar Pista, malai, rose, cardamom, apple, almond, chocolate, and paan masala. They are also of several varieties, matka kulfi, stick kulfi, and kulfi faloda. They can be made at home or bought from your nearest kulfi store. They are fun, cool, tasty, creamy, delicious, crunchy, sometimes spicy and refreshing. What can be a better way to beat that torturing summer heat than eating this frozen delight in front of your A.C., watching your favorite television sitcom!


3.Aam Panna

What can be better than the minty Aam Panna to beat that summer heat? It is prepared using raw mangoes, sugar and an assortment of spices. It quenches thirst and prevents the excessive loss of salt and iron during summer due to excessive sweating. It acts as a coolant, rehydrates the body, and combat fatigue. Aam Panna prevents constipation and also helps in the digestion process. So, a healthy and tasty drink that helps digest all our other favorite summer foods. Win-win situation, isn’t it?


Originating is Spain, Gazpacho is salty and crunchy and cool and delicious. It is essentially a soup made of raw vegetables and is served cold. It is made from tomatoes, olive oil, cucumbers, red bell pepper, onion, and garlic. Cold soups are not only delicious during summer months, but they also are quick and easy to make. It is filled with fresh, ripe, seasonal vegetables and fruits, is low and calories, and is packed with nutritional goodness. You can also make a watermelon or spinach gazpacho.

4. Cucumber

A whopping 96% of water content makes cucumber the best summer food to make up for the loss of all that water due to sweating. This crunchy vegetable costs little has lots of fiber that can help keep constipation at bay. You can also mix some yogurt or ice cubes and enhance the water content and flavor of this summer veggie. Not to forget the perfect use of cucumber as evening snack along with the hummus and sandwiched between bread slices. It can also be eaten as a salad mixed with onion, tomatoes, salt and spices to enhance flavor. Cucumber can truly make each of your bites crunchier and help you stay cool as a cucumber!

5. Lemonade

Although can be consumed all over the year, lemonade has a summer-like feel to it. As if it makes a bright summer day feel brighter. It helps stay calm and cool on a hot and sweaty summer day. It’s that balance – the little bit of sour, all the sweet, and the ice. You can have it sweet, salted or add a dash of black salt and cumin powder to it. You can also make a pink lemonade, by adding fruit flavors such as raspberry or strawberry among others.  Have it chilled and beat the heat.

6. Lassi

Lassi is a popular traditional yogurt-based drink. It is a blend of yogurt, water, spices and sometimes fruits.   It is one of the most loved beverages during the sweltering summer season. Smooth and creamy, the yogurt based dessert is traditionally served in earthen pots. It has an incredible power to cool you quickly. A sip of the sweet drink, topped with a generous amount of clotted cream is truly hard to resist, as you indulge to the last drop. A variety of fruits, spices and herbs can be added to the drink to give it a delicious makeover. 7.Coconut Water

Coconut water is the clear liquid found inside a young green coconut. It is one of the most popular drink to scare away the summer sun. It is available fresh from the coconut, canned or bottled. Though processed coconut water can be found at retailers, in ordinary cans, tetra packs, or plastic bottle; there is not a contest to drink the water fresh and directly from a coconut with a straw.Nothing better to get refreshed after a long summer day.

8. Panipuri

A common street snack in several regions of the Indian continent. Panipuri or golgappa or phuchhka is everybody’s favorite guilty pleasure. It consists os a round, hollow puri, fried crisp and filled with a mixture of tamarind chutney, chili, potato, onion, and chickpeas. Filled up with goodies, and flavored water it is almost like a good addiction. Although this street is available over the year, its minty flavor provides a refreshing relief from scorching summer heat.Nothing is better than eating a tasty, crispy panipuri out in the streets. Best way ever to tease the sun.


9. Delicious fruits

Mangoes, figs, grapes, blackberry, strawberry, peaches, watermelon, melon, apricot, plums, papaya, starfruit and much more. There is not an end to the delicious fruits that nature has offered to compensate for the torching heat. Be it the “king of the fruit”, mangoes or watermelon that contains a whopping 95% water content, summer fruit are a tasty and healthy delight. To get the most of these fruits, make a fruit salad with a yogurt dressing or a summer fruit pudding. Eat those berries with sour cream or drink the watermelon and mango juice to keep yourself cool. While we get fruits all over the year, eating those juicy delicacies in summer is a refreshing experience. So unleash you fruit desire and keep that scorching heat away from you. 

10. Corn on the cobs

Nothing says summer like fresh sweet corn. Corn is perfect in every way. Simple, elegant, fresh, grill-able and crunchy. There are innumerable ways a corn can be enjoyed and eaten. It can be grilled, roasted, or fried. It can be eaten as a salad or as a soup. But the best ever way to enjoy a corn is to roast it and sprinkled with salt, pepper, and lemon to enhance its taste. Apart from being a tasty food to soothe your tongue, it also contains two antioxidants present in corn, lutein and zeaxanthin act like natural sunglasses, helping to form macular pigment that filters out some of the sun’s damaging rays. In fact, the only bad thing about corn is that we don’t get them in winters.
